Top 5 Destinations To Escape The Winter Blues

Oct 28th 2015 | lifestyle | travel

As the nights close in and the trees don their vibrant colours, a distinct chill creeps into the air. A distinct chill that signals one thing: winter is coming. But don’t let the nip of a new season and the bite of wintry winds get you down. To feed your appetite for sun, sea, sand and heat, here are the top 5 winter sun destinations to escape to this year.

Miami, USA

For anyone not familiar with Miami, Will Smith's song “Welcome to Miami” pretty much sums up the city: "Party in the city where the heat is on/All night on the beach till the break of dawn." The party never stops on the sandy beaches of Miami and neither does the sunshine. Party central is the famous South Beach, an almost exact likeness of the Baywatch set - complete with slow motion jogging.

The Canary Islands

The 'Island of Eternal Spring' certainly lives up to it’s name in the winter months, with temperatures comfortably in the 20's. So for those looking to top up their tans and remember what it feels like to feel the sun on our delicate British complexions, the Canary Islands is the answer. Offering something a little different for fans of the Spanish lifestyle, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma are a big draw year round, with a wide range of activities, including watersports for sporty types and relaxing beaches for those looking to get away from it all.

With the seven-star property, the world's tallest tower, manmade islands, underwater hotels and buildings that actually spin, the city of Dubai really knows how to make the headlines. The so-called ‘Riviera of the Middle East’ spells virtually guaranteed sunshine, white sandy beaches and a host of incredible hotels, endless shopping and exotic cultural experiences, complete with a desert on its doorstep. What more can you ask for?

The Maldives

Low lying coral islands with a deep green heart of palms fringed by a glaring white beach and surrounded by a lagoon of the most fabulous pale lime and azure. A description of paradise, right? These tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, complete with immaculate resorts of various levels of splendidness, will make you feel like you’re in heaven on earth. A blissed-out beachy nirvana to beat that gloomy, grey commute on the Piccadilly Line.

For those chasing the sun, Australia is that destination. A glittering playground, with its sandstone coves and sun-blazed beaches skirt prodigious harbours and open Pacific.  With breaktaking wonders such as Ayer’s Rock, the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House, Australia has it all for those seeking a winter experience a little different from chestnuts roasting on an open fire. And if turkey in the tropics doesn’t sound right you can always substitute a few king prawns tossed on the Barbie.
